Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE)

The Ontario Centres of Excellence were founded in 1987 and consist of five Centres:

•      Centre for Energy
•      Communications and Information Technology Ontario (CITO)
•      CRESTech
•      Materials and Manufacturing Ontario (MMO)
•      Photonics Research Ontario (PRO)

Collectively, the Centres promote the economic development of Ontario through directed research, commercialization of technology and training for highly qualified personnel.

The Centres are among the few publicly funded institutions that systematically integrate and manage connections from university to marketplace to ensure the successful application of innovative science and technology to profitable new businesses.

AUTO21 supports an extensive and integrated multidisciplinary research program grouped in six themes: health, safety and injury prevention; societal issues and the automobile; materials and manufacturing; powertrains, fuels and emissions; design processes; and intelligent systems and sensors. These six themes reflect the strong influence the automobile has on the daily lives of Canadians.

Networks Centres of Excellence (NCE)

The NCE program builds on the sustained investment made by Industry Canada and the granting agencies – the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Their support has been central to building research excellence and supporting high-quality training in Canadian universities. The program also capitalizes on the infrastructure support and R&D personnel provided by universities that are enabling NCEs to forge innovative partnerships.

NCEs and their partners have developed multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral research programs that contribute to advancing knowledge and public policies in areas as diverse as engineering and manufacturing, health, human development and biotechnolog, information and communications technologies, as well as natural resources, the environment and water quality.
