Commercialization

The University of Windsor views the commercialization of Intellectual Property (IP) developed at the University as benefiting the University and the Community at large. The commercial value of intellectual property is fragile and needs to be properly protected before any steps are taken towards commercialization. Commercialization depends on the nature of the IP and how it is and will be preserved. Refer to the Intellectual Property section for more information.

Some examples of the end result of commercialization are as follows:

  1. New chemical formulation or recipe
  2. New material, product or product enhancement
  3. New process or process enhancement
  4. New logo
  5. New design form for front grill of new car
  6. New book, music, painting, sculpture or other art form
  7. New computer chip design that has better storage density
  8. New plant breed with certain new properties or characteristics         not present in other plants

Successful commercialization results in revenue and benefits for the owner(s) of the Intellectual Property. Ultimately commercialization is the process that takes the IP from concept to something of value for the end user.

The University of Windsor has developed a broad range of contacts that will assist the industry to work with the University and the owners of the IP for commercialization. The University strives to create mutually beneficial agreements/collaborations to provide industries and professionals which have the resources and infrastructure in place to target the marketplace. These agreements are done on an individual basis and vary based on the nature of the IP, markets identified, and costs involved. These agreements will assure the IP development and return revenues to both the owners of the IP and industry, and will be commensurate with the market success of the end product.
