Hey folks!
The year is winding down, but that doesn’t mean that we stop trying to make students lives better. Being a student right now is tough. While we are dealing with the stress of studying for exams and maintaining good grades, often we are juggling multiple low-wage or unpaid jobs, supporting our families and thinking about our futures. That is a lot!
This exam period, we want to make sure students are taking some time to care for their own mental well-being. We created a helpful tool in reaching out to students to help manage their stress. These materials outline some de-stressor techniques and pair well with any exam stress-buster activities your local has prepared for the rest of the semester. They work well as an online tool, too. If you would like campus- or local-specific changes to the materials, please be in touch!
Be sure to encourage your members to Tweet and Instagram @CFSON with their tips to destress before the holidays to win some amazing prizes!
All the best

Dear Graduate Student,
The University of Windsor is excited to be hosting its third annual UWill Discover! Undergraduate Research Conference, taking place on March 31, 2017.
Our Submission and Review Team would like to know if you would be interested in participating as an abstract reviewer for abstracts submitted to the conference. Because the conference accepts abstracts from all disciplines, grad students from any academic background may participate. We currently need 30 more volunteers by December 1st.
Here are a few more details:
· What would I be doing? Reading and critiquing approximately three 250-word abstracts according to the provided rubric. Ultimately you decide how many abstracts you would like to critique.
· When would I be needed? The review process will be conducted from December 1st to January 1st.
· Where would I need to be? Wherever you're comfortable! This process is conducted online and via email.
Our abstract reviewers are incredibly valuable to us and they are fundamental to the success of the conference. If this sounds like a cool opportunity, we'd love to have you join the reviewing committee. Just send us a quick email at uwillsubmissions@uwindsor.ca to let us know you're interested. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks for your consideration, and all the best with the rest of your semester!
Emily Kogel

Educating for Understanding
How can you help your students understand lives and cultures that are quite unlike their own, concepts and theories that seem utterly alien? This workshop will introduce you to ideas you can use to think through the challenging – and rewarding – task of answering that question, and thus create meaningful learning experiences for students that truly broaden their understanding. Although Educating for Understanding will be most directly relevant to faculty members in the arts, humanities and social sciences, many of the techniques and ideas shared will also be useful to those in other disciplines.
An email will be send to those students that were eligible to opt-out once your opt-out refund cheques have been printed and arrived and should be before the end of October.
For those students who opted-out for the early opt-out and were not assessed the GSS drug/dental benefits fee and are therefore not eligible for a refund.
Please be advised that the GSS has just received confirmation from Green Shield that ANY graduate student that was assessed the drug/dental fee (and did not opt-out or was not eligible to opt-out), you have now been activated.

Now that the rush of September is behind us, Provost Douglas Kneale is re-activating his successful Question of the Month contest, where he asks you to respond to a question about your UWindsor experiences. The author of the winning entry will receive a UWindsor hoodie.
Over the last couple of weeks, the University has been unveiling a new awareness campaign about the University of Windsor, communicating something that a lot of people on campus identify as a core characteristic of our students, staff, and faculty: Promise. So, the Provost is asking you to relate that to your own experiences at the U. This month’s question is: What does “promise” mean to you?
Please send your response, for another chance at that amazing UWindsor hoodie, to vpacademic@uwindsor.ca by October 31!
Friday October 14, 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM
This post is to inform all graduate students that the GSS cannot disclose the results of the department and at large Council positions at this time and are invoking 11.1.8 of the GSS constitution, which states, “The electoral committee shall make, in the event of a strike, circumstance beyond human control, or other event that may delay the electoral procedure, a decision as to how and when the electoral procedure may best be completed.” The GSS is invoking this Bylaw until this matter can be resolved in a timely fashion.
The GSS apologizes but we could not send out a mass email as that process requires 24 hours advance notice and since some of the graduate secretaries may be unavailable to send out a mass email, this is why you are receiving this email. We wish to thank you for your patience in this matter.

Hi everyone.
Hope you might be interested in the following session, focused on student engagement, and hosted by UWindsor’s Visiting Fellow in Educational Development, James Paterson.
James teaches in the School of Business at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Tauranga New Zealand. He is a recipient of the New Zealand Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award (2013) and acts as a current serving member of Ako Aotearoa’s Academy of Tertiary Teaching Excellence Executive Committee. Walking in two worlds: A New Zealand approach to student engagement
Schedule: Wednesday, July 13, 2016, 1:30pm–3:30pm
Location: Lambton 2103
Instructors: James Paterson
This teaching workshop provides a snapshot on how a New Zealand teacher has significantly improved student completion and success rates for both Maori and European learners, largely through a thorough understanding of each of his student’s individual journeys. But how is it possible to build robust individual relationships when significant student cultural and social diversity exists and when class sizes continue to expand? This workshop, facilitated by CTL’s current Visiting Fellow James Paterson from Tauranga, New Zealand, examines ways of creating robust relationships by understanding whanuangatanga and “walking in two worlds”, and how these concepts impact on student success. In addition, as a proud Kiwi, husband, dad, teacher and sports fanatic, the facilitator will leave you with a greater understanding of New Zealand, and New Zealand’s contribution to global education.
