Margery Holman, 2001 Equity Assessor Award Recipient

 The 2001 President's Employment Equity Award was presented to Kinesiology Professor Margery Holman at a reception Tuesday where 62 professors who have volunteered as equity assessors since 1998 were also honoured.

Previously, the award has been presented in the past to Pamela Milne, Lois Smedick, Mary Lou Deitz, Anne Forrest, Diana Mady Kelly and Don Thomas.

Equity assessors are volunteers who ensure procedures are followed and opportunities not missed for recruiting and considering persons from the four groups: women, minorities, persons with disabilities and aboriginal people.

Dr. Ross Paul, president of the University of Windsor, said the university is indebted to all who have been equity assessors. "It is not always intuitive to colleagues what equity means each case," he said. "Willingness to seek non-traditional candidates is becoming even more important as we move into a sellers market."

Dr. Paul notes that 34 percent of Windsor faculty are women, a huge increase from a few years ago.

Congratulating Professor Holman, Dr. Paul said she personifies quiet leadership. He noted that she has served on search committees in most every area of the university, including for the appointment of the Dean of Business.

Dean of Human Kinetics James Weese adds that Marge has made immense contributions to championing equity practices in the Faculty of Human Kinetics as well as the sport and recreation programs on local, provincial and national scales. Dr. Holman has developed an international reputation in the area of gender issues in sport and physical activity. She has written and presented in the area, including a section of her new book that was recently published. She has received external funds to support research studies in the areas of sport and media in domestic violence, women in sport leadership and equity issues within sport and physical activity programs.
